A SIP Proxy Server is the network element to enable SIP endpoints (hard phones or softphones) to exchange messages, register user locations and seamlessly move between other networks. SIP Servers also enable network operators to install necessary routing and security policies, manage user locations and authenticate other users.
SIP Proxy Server applications are varied, but SIP standards define three
main types of server operation that apply to everyone:
Proxy
Registrar servers
Redirect
These standard functionalities can be implemented to suit needs. A SIP Proxy Server may also be set up as a Back-to-Back User Agent (B2BUA) or presence server. SIP defines other event types, such as Winfo and Register, a SIP Server may
function as an Events Server for handling the various SIP events.
A SIP Proxy deals with many different network types, such as public Internet networks, mobile based networks and home broadband networks, with complex routing policies, security and SIP extensions. SIP Proxy Servers are often designed to handle very high message / processing rates whilst providing real-time performance with scalability, high throughput with very low response times.
